To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a longer ingot than an ingot manufactured by a conventional simple batch method in a technique for manufacturing the ingot of an active metal such as a titanium alloy by melting with a cold crucible comprising a water-cooled copper crucible and a high-frequency coil and solidifying.
In the apparatus for manufacturing the active metal ingot comprising the cold crucible constituted by combining the water-cooled copper crucible (1), the high-frequency coil (2) and a high frequency power supply means, an addition means (3) for a melting material and a hoisting mechanism (4) for lowering the water-cooled copper crucible are added. Using the apparatus, an initial material is melted, an additional material is added and the water- cooled copper crucible is lowered after addition. The above processes are repeated to obtain the long ingot.
