To obtain a method and an apparatus which take it into consideration that not only the whole elongation but also the partial elongation of a wire rope can be measured.
An initial number of pitches, within a reference length L, of detection points 2A, 2B which exist at constant intervals in the length direction of a wire rope 2 are measured by moving a sensor 4 over the reference length L. A pitch P1 (P2 or P3) and the number of pitches of the detection points 2A, 2B within the reference length L after the generation of the elongation of the wire rope 2 are measured. The number of pitches of the detection points 2A, 2B after the generation of the elongation is compared with the initial number of pitches of the detection points 2A, 2B. Thereby, the elongation amount of the wire rope 2 is found.
