Title:
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MEASURING DISTRIBUTION OF ZERO DISPERSION WAVELENGTH OF OPTICAL FIBER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3248559
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To measure the distribution of zero dispersion wavelength in the longitudinal direction of an optical fiber by observing the backscattering waveform of a light pulse indicating the power distribution of the light pulse in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: In a light pulse tester 10, a light pulse is made incident on an optical fiber to be measured 6. A backscattering light is generated at each part in the fiber 6 when the light pulse propagates. In the tester 10, the backscattering light generated and returned from each part of the optical fiber 6 is split by a directional coupler 13 and detected by a high-speed photodetector 14. A waveform of the light is displayed at a display part 15. The backscattering light is continuously returned from each part during the propagation of the light pulse. The backscattering light from a further part takes a longer time to return to the entering end. Therefore, the waveform of the backscattering light expands more in comparison with the light pulse incident upon the fiber 6. A distribution of power of the light pulse in the longitudinal direction in the fiber 6 can be detected by observing the waveform. A zero dispersion wavelength of a part of the fiber 6 where a modulation instability is generated, is accordingly determined.
