Abstract:

PURPOSE: To measure the nonlinear refractive index of an optical fiber accurately by comparing the time waveform and a calculation data of frequency chirp characteristics with the time waveform of outgoing light pulse and a measured data of frequency chirp characteristics and determining a provisional value of nonlinear refractive index, at the time of matching within an allowable range, as the nonlinear refractive index of an optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: The time waveform and frequency chirp characteristics are measured for incoming and outgoing pulses of a fiber to be measured. The time waveform and frequency chirp characteristics data are calculated for the outgoing pulse according to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation using the time waveform and frequency chirp measurement data of incoming pulse, the data of provisional value of nonlinear refractive index, the puff of light incident to the fiber to be measured, etc. They are compared with the time waveform and the calculated date of frequency chirp characteristics of outgoing optical pulse. When they do not match each other, the provisional value of nonlinear refractive index is modified and the calculation is repeated. When they match each other, the provisional value of nonlinear refractive index is determined as the nonlinear refractive index of the optical fiber.
