To provide a method and an apparatus capable of high-accuracy measurement of physical property values of liquid crystals.
A liquid crystal cell having no twists in an orientation distribution of liquid crystals is used to measure the optical characteristics of the liquid crystal cell, in at least a total of four conditions that an angle of incidence and a wavelength are made different, in such a way that at least one level of the angle of incidence is divided into two levels or more of the wavelength, and that at least one level of the wavelength may be divided into three levels or more of the angle of incidence, to decide on the wavelength dependence on the refractive index no of ordinary light of the liquid crystals and the wavelength dependence of the refractive index ne of extraordinary light, on the basis of the fitting between measurement values and simulated computed values.
