This method comprises passing pressed selvedges (21 and 21a) through guide rollers (2 and 2a) of a monitoring device (1) so that the takeoff of the pressed selvedges (21 and 21a) can be monitored, rotating the guide rollers (2 and 2a) in the process, detecting the rotative direction and/or rotational speed of the guide rollers (2 and 2a) with sensor devices (3 and 4 and 3a and 4a) and processing detected signals with an electronic analyzer (24) so as to carry out an analysis.
