To provide a method and apparatus for operating an internal combustion engine having injection of a cooling fluid into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: A method comprises: identifying a risk of knocking in present combustion in a combustion chamber (101); and, upon the risk of knocking exceeding a threshold, injecting a cooling fluid into a combustion chamber (101) for the present combustion.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
