To simplify the handling of an article at the time of changes in the size of an article and expand a range of the size of an article, capable of being packaged.
A film F is withdrawn to a film spreading portion where four sides of fore, rear, right and left edges thereof are held, and a suction box 63 is moved up to a position higher than the film spreading portion from below with respect to the central part of the film F, whereby the film F is stretched out by a predetermined extent as a whole. The central part of the film is sucked by the suction box 63, and the film F is thus deformed to a height lower than a minimum height for packaging. After setting an article 43 on the deformed film F, the suction box 63 is lowered down to a position where the upper end of the article 43 is positioned below the folding height of the film and the relation between the upper end position of the article 43 and the folding height of the film becomes constant. Thus, by folding the four-side edges of the film at the upper face side of the article 43, the article 43 is packaged.
