PURPOSE: To perform polishing of good workability and good accuracy by polishing the roll built in journal box while maintaining the position of the loading zone in the shaft supporting plane of the journal box at the same position as that in use.
CONSTITUTION: Journal boxes 3, 5 laid horizontally on polishing tables 4, 6 are elevated and traversed by support metals 9, 12 to adjust the position relation between an upper backup roll 2 and a grindstone 13. A required load is applied to the upper backup roll 2 by a pressure roller device 14 and a drive unit 20 is operated to revolve the grindstone 13, whereby roll polishing is accomplished. Since with this constitution the roll is polished in the same condition as that during rolling, the magnitude of roll eccentricity may be considerably reduced and the rolled material of good accuracy obtained. Since there is no need for separating the rolls and jouranl box, the number of working steps is reduced and the occurrence of damages owing to the dismounting and remounting of the bearing parts obviated.
