Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for producing a porous glass preform in high productivity so as to be uniform in deposition in the longitudinal direction.
SOLUTION: This method for producing a porous glass preform comprises depositing glass microparticles on a starting preform using a plurality of burners set up in a transverse row and subject to reciprocating movement in the longitudinal direction; wherein the burner row is set up on a 1st movement shaft and subjected to reciprocating movement, the 1st movement shaft is then set up on a 2nd movement shaft and the burner row is subjected to reciprocating movement similarly, thereby the turning back position of the reciprocating movement of the burner row is shifted; and the reciprocating movement width along at least one of the 1st and 2nd movement shafts is made to stand at a multiple of the interval between the adjacent burners set up above in a row.
