Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for removing sulfur compounds, such as H2S and mercaptans, contained in an impurity gas contained in a natural gas or the like by recovering them as elementary sulfur, characterized in that it comprises a step of separating the impurity gas from the natural gas or the like, a concentration step of separating the impurity gas into a concentrated gas comprising H2S as a main component and a residual gas comprising mercaptans and CO2 as main components, a step of subjecting the concentrated gas to a Claus reaction process to recover H2S as elementary sulfur, a step of heating the off-gas from the Claus reaction process to a temperature of 700 DEG C or less and mixing the heated off-gas with the above residual gas, a step of subjecting the resultant mixed gas to a hydrogenation process to convert sulfur compounds such as a mercaptan to H2S by using a reduction catalyst, and a step of separating the H2S and recycling it to the above Clause reaction process.
