To provide a hydrocarbon separation method for highly efficiently separating unsaturated hydrocarbons and saturated hydrocarbons even if the hydrocarbons are ones having three or more carbon atoms and having the same number of carbon atoms, such as propylene and propane.
The hydrocarbon separation method includes bringing a mixture into contact with a metal complex containing a metal ion, a counter ion, and a ligand represented by the following formula (I): Q1-(R)n-Q2, wherein Q1 and Q2 are each independently a heterocycle group containing a nitrogen atom; n is an integer of 3 to 20; R is one selected from the group consisting of the following formulae (II-1) to (II-4): -C(R1)(R2)-, -C(=O)-, -O-, and -N(R3)-, respectively, wherein R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; and R3 is a hydrogen atom, or a hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent.
