PURPOSE: To prevent the production of a ground pattern on a ground surface by changing a table movement cycle at random in order to shift an uneven phase due to the vibration of a constant cycle.
CONSTITUTION: The table 2 is coupled with a driving mechanism 19 (hydraulic) so as to be able to reciprocate in the direction parallel to the rotating surface of a grinding wheel 1. Random delay means 10 and 11 are connected to the driving mechanism 19 to input a signal to it at a random cycle in order to change over the operation direction of the driving mechanism 19 so that the table 2 is reciprocated at the random cycle, and the table 2 and the grinding wheel 1 are moved relatively to each other in the direction perpendicular to the reciprocating movement of the table 2 and in the direction of the infeed of a workpiece 3 respectively to grind it. Thus machining permits the uneven phase produced on the ground surface to be randomly shifted every lateral motion of the table 2, so that the production of such ground patterns as stripes and oblique cross-stripes crossing the grinding direction can be prevented.
