This method for thawing a food is characterized by carrying out a melting process for raising the temperature of a part of the food by an external heating in at least a part of the thawing time of the food and a process for supplying a heat energy preferentially to the melted part of the food by electromagnetic radiation. This apparatus for thawing a food is characterized in that the apparatus has a first thawing means for raising the temperature of a part of the food by an external heating in at least a part of the thawing time of the food to melt a part of the food and a second thawing means for supplying a heat energy preferentially to the melted part of the food by the first thawing means by using an electromagnetic wave. Consequently, the method has extremely excellent conduction efficiency of heat energy in comparison with a conventional method by a microwave oven and can thaw the frozen food in a short time uniformly.
