To provide a method for treating excretion and/or septic tank sludge, capable of treating excretion and/or septic tank sludge for a short time in a high decomposition ratio by reduced energy using a simple apparatus and operation without using a flocculant to detoxify the same, capable of reducing the generation amount of sludge, capable of easily treating ammonia and also enabling the reutilization of treated water, and to provide apparatus for the method.
A material to be treated comprising excretion and/or septic tank sludge is ground by a grinder 6 and decarbonated by a decarbonation apparatus 7. A defoaming agent is added to the ground material and the pH of the ground material is adjusted to 7 or more by a pH control agent and seed crystals are added to the ground material. The thus treated ground material is supplied to a concentrator 2 from a tank 1 for the material to be treated through a heat exchanger 12 to be evaporated and concentrated to transfer ammonia to an evaporation side while condensed water 27 is supplied to a catalytic reaction tank 31 to decompose and remove ammonia, and the concentrate 30 is introduced into a hydrothermal reactor 4 along with an oxidizing agent 45 to perform hydrothermal reaction in a supercritical or sub-critical state to oxidize and decompose organic matter.
