To prevent deterioration in the quality of iron and to recover dust having high zinc content.
At least one among ASR (automobile shredder residue), shredder dust from electric appliances, waste plastics and RDF (refuse derived fuel) and RPF (refuse paper and plastic fuel) both obtained from wastes, as a waste which is effective as a reducing material for zinc-containing iron oxide to be supplied into a kiln 2 and generates heat in an amount necessary for reduction, is supplied into the kiln 2 and subjected to heat treatment, and hereby zinc is reduced and separated from the zinc-containing iron oxide and iron oxide is reduced to obtain metal iron. In the above treatment, the reduction temperature in the kiln 2 is set to 800 to 1.080°C to prevent copper of 1,083°C melting point from melting and adhering to iron and to prevent deterioration in the quality of iron. Zinc separated from the zinc-containing iron oxide is volatilized and scattered in the form of dust of fine particle size and can be recovered in the form of dust having high zinc content in which zinc is concentrated as zinc oxide.
