PURPOSE: To execute pattern application onto a moving metal coil while exactly controlling a patterning position on this metal coil.
CONSTITUTION: The apparatus is provided with an applicator roll means 88 for applying the pattern and a drive means 102 for applying rotation on this applicator roll means. The metal coil 2 is continuously advanced and is brought into contact with the applicator roll means 88. The pattern is applied by the applicator roll means on the moving coil. The pattern length is measured and the measured pattern length is compared with a prescribed pattern length. If the deviation between the measured pattern length and the prescribed pattern length exceeds a set value, the rotating speed of the applicator roll means 88 is adjusted. When the pattern length is shorter than the prescribed pattern length, the speed of the applicator roll is delayed. When the pattern length is long, the speed of the applicator roll is increased.
