To provide a method for applying a pretension to a power transmitting chain where the circumferential length of a chain to be used in a continuously variable transmission can be easily decided at high precision, and to provide a pretension applying tool.
The pretension applying fixture 31 includes a shaft-like guide part 32 present on the tip side and having an outer circumferential length smaller than the inner circumferential length of a chain; and a circumferential length setting part 33 present on the base end side and having an outer circumferential length equal to the inner circumferential length of the chain, and at which the endless chain 1 passed from the tip side is stopped. The endless chain 1 is passed from the tip side of the pretension applying fixture 31, and is moved to the circumferential length setting part 33 so as to apply the pretension thereto.
