PURPOSE: To stably obtain a casting having high wear resistance and toughness by dividing a mold into a thick part and a thin part, using a metallic mold in the thick part and a sand mold in the thin part and arranging a chiller on the sand mold at intermediate part between the thick part and the thin part.
CONSTITUTION: In a casting space 1 in the mold 2 for casting a cylinder liner, etc., the thin part (a) at the skirt side of the cylinder liner is made to upward and the thick part (b) at a top combustion chamber side is made to downward and the suitable feeder head part and excess thickness are formed. On each outer peripheral of the thick parts corresponding to each of the thick part (b) and the thin part (a) of the casting in the mold 2, the sand mold 21 is arranged. Further, as the mold at the outer periphery of the thick part (b) of the cylinder liner, the cast iron-made metallic mold 22 having the same degree of the thickness as the thickness of the cylinder liner is arranged. The chillers 23 are arranged on the inner surfaces of the positions adjacent to the metallic mold 22 of the sand mold 21. By this method, even in the case of being a casting having different thicknesses in each position, a product having uniform structure and mechanical property at each position is obtd.
