PURPOSE: To improve the utilization efficiency of solid medium in the catalytic reaction of heavy petroleum oil, by separating the magnetizable particulate solid medium coated with the metal deposited from the heavy petroleum oil by the catalytic reaction and the nonmagnetizable particulate solid medium using a magnetic separator, and then reusing the latter medium for the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Heavy petroleum oil consisting of petroleum oil containing fractions having boiling point of ≥190°C (or a product obtained therefrom by hydrogenative desulfurization) is made to react in a catalytic reactor containing particulate solid medium having particle diameter of ≤5cm (pref. 0.1W500μm). After the reaction, at least a part of the medium is extracted from the reactor, and passed through a magnetic separator having a magnetic field of usually 1,000W20,000 gauss or more to separate the magnetizable particles from the nonmagnetizable particles, which are then returned to the catalytic reactor and reused.
