To provide a method for classifying and bundling postal matters wherein miscellaneous bundling operations can be reduced when a large quantity of postal matters are to be classified and bundled.

Postal matters are sorted by postal zone numbers, and a normal bundle N comprising the specified number of postal matters (a) of the same postal zone number, and a fractional bundle comprising postal matters wherein the number of postal matters of the same postal zone number is less than the specified number are discharged from a discharge conveyor. When a device wherein defective postal matters are discharged as one unit from a rejecter 2 is used, an identifiable control number is individually imparted to postal matters (a) to recognize a defective matter delivered from the rejecter 2, whereby the postal zone number of defective matter is found out from the recognized number to display it, so that a fractional bundle being an object to be inserted as a defective matter can be determined by a worker. Since the worker can easily determine a fractional bundle to be inserted from a large quantity of bundles, miscellaneous bundles can be prevented from being produced.
