PURPOSE: To conduct coal liquefaction in a simple manner with an improvement in the percentage formation of an effective oleaginous component, by heat treating in an inert or reducing atmosphere a hydrogenation product of coal comprising components adjusted so as to meet particular requirements.
CONSTITUTION: High-boiling components contained in a hydrogenation product of coal are adjusted so as to meet the following requirements: (1) the n-hexane- soluble is 10wt.% or more, and (2) the ratio of a component insoluble in n- hexane and soluble in benzene to a benzene-insoluble org. material is 0.8 or more (weight ratio). The resulting product is heat-treated at 200W400°C in an inert or reduction atmosphere to increase the effective oleaginous component content. The title method having the above constitution serves to improve the percentage formation of and recovery of an effective component contained in the product after coal hydrogenation readily at a low cost. Further, since the heat treatment stabilizes radicals, there occurs no problem of coking etc. in the subsequent treatments.
