PURPOSE: To compact raw coal in a short time with a simple operation, by a method wherein raw coal is introduced into a frame for compaction, and vibration of the frame for compaction and pressing of raw coal from above are carried out.

CONSTITUTION: A predetermined amount of raw coal 9 is introduced from a hopper 8 into a frame 10 for compaction, which is supported on a vibrating stand 6. After the completion of the introduction of raw coal, the vibrating stand 6 is vibrated by a vibration-generating device. Since the frame 10 is locked through a locking means on the vibrating stand 6, the whole parts are vibrated as one body to compact raw coal 9 within the frame. At this time, the bottom and side parts of raw coal are mainly compacted. After the lock of the locking means is released, the frame 10 is moved through a wheel 13 to the side of a coke oven 1 by operating a traveling winch 14, and thereby a roller press type pressing device 11 provided on the frame 10 presses raw coal 9 from above to compact it. The upper part of raw coal is mainly compacted by the pressing device 11. Thus, raw coal is compacted wholly and uniformly by the compaction by the above vibration and the pressing device.
