Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To consecutively maintain a correct heading in heading reference systems such as aircraft heading reference systems, integrated standby units, or vehicle inertial systems.SOLUTION: A method and system, which compensate for significant soft iron magnetic disturbances, are configured to: when a difference to be calculated in value between a gyro compass heading relative to magnetic north and a magnetometer reading during a measurement period exceeds a prescribed acceptable threshold value of a change based on an expected drift of the gyro compass over the period, give a heading correction signal to a heading reference system; and upon receipt of the heading correction signal, with the gyro compass heading adjusted, maintain an accurate heading relative to true magnetic north, in which, when this threshold value is not exceeded, the magnetometer reading is used as a heading value. This method is repeatedly conducted to consecutively maintain the correct heading. Further, this method may be employed relative to each heading measurement axis.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
