To provide a method of controlling a synchronous motor for a rolling mill on a hot rolling line.

This method has a process of computing required toque in a real time, based on the number of revolutions and the armature current of the synchronous motor; and a process of deciding a field current value needed at worst, based on the required torque. The current is controlled into a decided field current value in a real time.
