To stabilize the exposure accuracy of a shutter while saving power consumption during the execution of an electronic view finder function.
In the method for controlling a mechanical shutter for the imaging apparatus, which has the mechanical shutter including a front curtain and a rear curtain held at initial positions before traveling by using power, picks up an image by using an imaging device and has the electronic view finder function. In order to carry out the electronic view finder function, the front curtain is made to travel and also the rear curtain is held at the initial position so as to expose the imaging device. When the voltage of power to hold the rear curtain is decreased and taking a still picture is instructed in the midst of carrying out the electronic view finder function, the rear curtain is made to travel to shield the imaging device from light when shutter time elapses after the imaging device is reset by increasing the voltage of power to hold the rear curtain if the shutter time set for photography is shorter than the previously set time.
