To solve problem of a conventional spark-ignition internal combustion engine in which the ignition of an air-fuel mixture is improved using plasma wherein when a variation in rotational speed occurs due to, for example, the fouling of a spark plug or the like, a control to adjust an ignition timing is performed so as to, for example, lower a torque for a cylinder under excellent combustion state, however, since the torque of the cylinder under excellent combustion state is adjusted, the characteristics of the use of plasma cannot be sufficiently utilized.
This method for controlling the operation of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, which comprises a plurality of cylinders each having a combustion chamber and in which the electric field generated in the combustion chamber is reacted with a spark discharge by an ignition plug to generate plasma for igniting an air-fuel mixture, controls the intensity of the field according to the operating state of the internal combustion engine. The combustion state of each cylinder is detected, and the intensity of the electric field of the cylinder the detected combustion state of which is mostly deteriorated is increased.
