Abstract:

PURPOSE: To stabilize penetration with good accuracy by a simple method by controlling the bead width concluded from the ultimate temp. of the penetration bead part measured from the rear side of members to be welded and the temp. distribution in the bead part to a specified value.

CONSTITUTION: When welding members 6, 6' are fixed in a prescribed position by clampers 8, the members 6, 6' which are held clamped begin to travel in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the paper by a traveling table upon starting of laser irradiation. When the butt part 7 to be welded arrives at the position right under the laser light L condensed by a lens 3, welding work is started and the temp. on the rear side of the part 7 rises instantaneously. The temp. thereof is detected by a detecting part 9. Since the part 8 moves back and forth in the direction crossing the weld line, the output signal obtd. finally from an amplifier 13 has the form shown in the figure. The transition with time of the ultimate temp. in the penetration bead part and the temp. distribution in the transverse direction of the bead is recognized from the output signal. The oscillation output of a laser oscillator 1 is regulated according to said signal by which the ultimate temp. and the temp. distribution in the transverse direction of the bead are controlled to the specified values.
