To restrict an excessive temperature rise of a thermal head by detecting the temperature of the thermal head and the temperature of an environment where the thermal head is placed, and correcting a heating energy to be applied to the thermal head in accordance with a temperature difference.
An erase/printing command is issued via a serial interface 73 to a CPU 70. A printing command process is called in accordance with a program stored in a ROM 71. A temperature of an environment and a temperature of an erase head 50 as a thermal head are measured respectively by an environment temperature sensor 69 and a temperature sensor 94, and also a difference of the temperatures is obtained. A heating energy to be applied to the erase head 50 is corrected according to the obtained temperature difference. An excessive temperature rise of the erase head 50 is restricted, so that the erase head can be held at an appropriate process temperature at all times. A characteristic of a thermal process is accordingly improved.
