PURPOSE: To uniformly wipe the whole surface by measuring the film thickness of rolling oil through the infrared method on the downstream side of a wiping roll at every area corresponding to a unit backup roll and controlling the compressive force of the roll based on this result.
CONSTITUTION: A compressive means 8 is provided at every unit backup roll 4 composing a line 3 of backup rolls so that it can be controlled remotely. A sensor 17 is provided on the downstream side of a wiping roll 2 and at every area corresponding to each position of a unit backup roll 4 to measure the film thickness of the rolling oil or the infrared transmissivity. The compressive force of the unit backup roll 4 is adjusted based on the result and the pressure of the wiping rolls 2 is controlled so that the thickness of the rolling oil is uniformized in the width direction. The adjustment of the compressive force of the unit backup roll is carried out in combination with the adjustment of the compressive force of all lines 3 of backup rolls by the compressive means 7 for the whole body.
