PURPOSE: To simplify a conveying device and to reduce the size thereof, by a metho wherein operations to convey and position a sheet material by means of a sheet material absorbing device, which can be moved between a paper box and an automatic drawing device, are performed in 2 steps.

CONSTITUTION: When a paper is fed onto a table 1, an absorbing device 17 is firstly actuated by a motor 20 to lower an absorbing head 18 and a blast pipe 19, and a sucker 21 is brought into contact with the left end of the upper surface of a paper 23 in a paper box 24 to start absorption of the paper 23. After the paper 23 is absorbed, the absorbing device 17 is raised as the air is injected to the side of the laminated paper through the blast pipe 19, and only the uppermost paper 23 is taken out. Thereafter, after, with a slide guiding mechanism actuated, the absorbing device 17 is moved leftward to the vicinity of a portion above left end of the table 1, the paper 23 is temporarily placed on the table 1. After the absorbing device 17 is raised, it is moved slightly backward, and thereafter, the paper 23 is absorbed again by means of the absorbing head 18, the absorbing device is moved forward until the end surface of the paper is moved to a given position in a pancher 33, and this causes positioning of the sheet.
