To decrease the frictional resistance of a polymer surface coated so as to be hydrophilic by treating the surface with a complexing agent for heavy metal ions.
The hydrophilic coating film is derived from e.g. a monomer represented by formula I: R-(A)a (wherein R is an a-valent mono- or di- olefinically unsaturated organic group; and A is -COOH, -OSO2OH, -SO3H, -OPO(O)2, -PO(OH)2, -OP(OH)2, or phenolic hydroxyl; and a is 1-6) or from a monomer represented by formula II: (CnH2n-q-x)(COOR1)x or formula III: (CnH2n-q)(SO3R1)x (wherein n is 2-6; x is 1 or 2; q is 0 or 2; and R' is H, a metallic ion, a 1-6C alkanol, or the like). The heavy metal ion is exemplified by an Fe, Mn, Co, or Ni ion. The complexing agent is a chelate complexing agent and forms a complex with a heavye metal ion. It is, for example, EDTA and is used in the form of an aqueous solution having a concentration of 0.1 mmol to 0.1 mol/l.
