PURPOSE: To discriminate a defect accurately in the direction, inclination, size, and depth, by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic wave beams so that they cross the center of rotation in a flaw detection area in a material to be inspected, and using angle probes of plural channels which differ in flaw detection depth.
CONSTITUTION: There is a lateral-hole defect 2 in the material 1 to be inspected. A scanning frame 3 is driven by a motor 4 to slide freely forward and backward, i.e. in an Y-axis direction along rails 4 arranged on both sides of the material 1 to be inspected while a movable frame 5 supported on the running frame 3 is moved freely laterally, i.e. in an X-axis direction by motor 6. The supporting plate 8 of the movable frame 5 is equipped with a tank 7, which is slid freely on the front surface of the material 1 to be inspected; and a probe rotating mechanism 9 is arranged in the tank 7 and supplied with a liquid medium 10. A probe holder 15 is provided at the lower end of the rotating shaft 14 of the probe rotating mechanism 9 and four angle probes 16W19 are incorporated in the holder 15 circumferentially at intervals of 90°.
