Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the position of a pipe device propelled into the ground.
SOLUTION: An intermediate receiver 20 is provided at the end of the pipe device 13 and at least three receivers 12, 12 and so forth for receiving elastic waves are installed in different positions of an above-ground portion or an underground portion ahead of the end of the pipe device 13. Impact is applied to the rear end of the pipe device 13 by an impacting means 21 to cause an elastic wave to propagate through the front end of the pipe device. The elastic wave is transmitted into the ground and the time from reception of the wave by the intermediate receiver 20 to the arrival of the wave at each receiver is measured. Based on the time measured and the known three-dimensional position of each receiver, the distance from the intermediate receiver 30 to each of the receivers 12, 12 and so forth is calculated.
