PURPOSE: To accurately detect the presence of a substance sticking to the wall of a blast furnace or a stagnant layer along the wall by stopping the charge of starting materials, charging other different starting materials and collecting the contents in the shaft of the furnace after the lapse of a certain time.
CONSTITUTION: During the operation of a blast furnace, the charging of generally used starting materials is stopped and other starting materials different from the generally used starting materials in shape are charged. After the lapse of a certain time, the contents in the shaft of the furnace are collected at a proper position. The presence or absence of the generally used starting materials is detected from the collected contents. When the collected contents contain the generally used starting materials, it is determined that a substance sticking to the wall of the furnace or a stagnant layer along the wall is present below the collection position.
