PURPOSE: To determine pool surface level of molten metal with excellent resolution and precision by utilizing a sensor temp. in a station at the upstream side just near the station of the sensor during responsing and enabling the interpolation between the detecting stations.
CONSTITUTION: In order to determine the position of pool 22 surface of the molten metal 24 in an input range 11 in an apparatus 15, i.e., the surface level P, the stations 1-10 composed of couples of thermal detecting sensors 1a-10a and 1b-10b, are constituted. A threshold value temp. offset at higher than the liquid cooling temp. of a cooling material used for cooling a belt 12 by a prescribed temp. difference is set and the sensor during responsing, indicating the temp. exceeding the threshold value temp. is selected from one series of sensors. Further, the position P of molten metal 22 surface is determined, by whether the succeeding downstreamside sensor exceeds the threshold value temp. or not. Then, the higher pool surface than the sensor position during responsing is interpolated from the sensor temp. at just the upstream side to the sensor during responsing, and the precision of the determination of the pool surface can be improved.
