Abstract:

To provide a pointing device, which is reduced in a movement area, associated with cursor movement on a screen.

According to one embodiment, a pointing device has a pointing device surface 12 and sliding structures 11, 55 that move with respect to the pointing device surface 12. Detectors 56-59 outputs a value that varies as the sliding structures 11, 55 moves with respect to the pointing device surface 12. A controller 60 estimates the location of the sliding structures 11, 55 on the pointing device surface 12 by calculating an approximate distance. The approximate distance is calculated by multiplying the differential of the measured value by a conversion constant. The controller 60 adjusts the approximate distance so as to consider the non-linearity of the measured differential.
