An aqueous solution or suspension of at least one harmful halogenated organic compound, which is selected from the group consisting of dioxins, polybiphenyl chloride, dichlorobiphenyl, halogenated phenols, a halogenated lower aldehyde and a halogenated lower fatty acid, [which may contain (a) a surfactant, (b) ions and/or fine powder of at least one metal selected from iron, zinc and tin and (c) a mixture of them] or an aqueous solution or suspension of halogenated benzene, which contains (a) a surfactant, (b) ions and/or fine powder of at least one metal selected from iron, zinc and tin and (c) a mixture of them, is irradiated with ultrasonic waves to decompose the harmful halogenated organic compound to detoxify the same.
