A detecting method includes an image pickup step of picking up an image of a butted portion of two steel plates so that a butting line is in the horizontal axial direction of an image pickup plate of an image pickup apparatus, a binarizing step of outputting the binarized image of a partial image obtained from the picked-up image acquired in the image pickup step by using the preset threshold T, a step (a) for computing the differential value V of the brightness in the y-axis direction for the binarized brightness value U' of respective pixel coordinates (i, j) with the horizontal axial direction being the x-axis direction, and the vertical axial direction being the y-axis direction, for each i, a step (b) of computing the brightness differential projection value W by integrating the brightness differential value V computed in the step (a) for i, and a peak position detection step of obtaining the pixel position of the peak in the brightness differential projection value W computed in the step (b), and detecting it as each butt groove position of the two steel plates.
