To provide a method and a device for detecting incidence of a single photon accurately.
Under a state where an avalanche photodiode 11 is applied with a specified voltage lower than the breakdown voltage thereof, and a first pulse voltage Vp1 being generated in synchronism with a trigger signal St delivered from a single photon generating source 2 upon generation of a photon Ph and having a magnitude exceeding the breakdown voltage when combined with the specified voltage, a photon Ph enters the avalanche photodiode 11 and incidence of the photon Ph is detected when the output level of a pulse signal Sp delivered from the avalanche photodiode 11 exceeds a specified threshold level. In such a method for detecting a single photon, the timing for starting application of the first pulse voltage Vp1 to the avalanche photodiode 11 is adjusted to an optimal timing in the vicinity of incidence of the photon Ph.
