PURPOSE: To intelligibly present contents of a document to a retriever and to easily present plural retrieval results by preparing not only the title sentence of the document but also principal sentences of the document as retrieval results to be presented to the retriever.
CONSTITUTION: A storage means 2 where a retrieval word to specify document data of the retrieval object is inputted and stored and a retrieval processing means 3 which retrieves document data including this retrieval word from a document file based on the retrieval word are provided. The title sentence indicating document data retrieved by the retrieval processing means 3 and/or sentences before and after the retrieval word are extracted from document data by extracting means 5 and 6. Sentences extracted by extracting means 5 and 6 are displayed on a display means. Thus, contents of retrieved document data are intelligibly displayed to the operator because the title sentence of document data and/or sentences before and after the retrieval word are displayed at the time of retrieval of document data.
