The printed sheets are fed to a horizontally extending pile base 3 by a transfer device 4 to form a pile of printed sheets. The pile side surface 38 of the pile 5 to be composed, on a side opposite to the transfer device 4, and the pile side surface thereof, on the side of the transfer device 4, are supported by a support device 7. The pile 5 is delivered to a press unit provided with a first press wagon 15 and a second press wagon 16. The pile 5 is pressed into a pile 5' between both the press wagons 15, 16 and bound. The first press wagon 15 is moved toward another pile 5 composed on the pile base 3 after binding and takes over support of another pile on the pile side surface 38 of the pile, on the side opposite to the transfer device 4, from the support device 7 until the second press wagon 16 is unlocked and takes over a supporting function.
