PURPOSE: To harden a long-sized shaft while preventing the generation of the deflection deformation by gravity by holding and supporting the long-sized shaft in a vertical posture in the plural longitudinal positions and spraying cooling fluid thereto while rotating the shaft.
CONSTITUTION: After the long-sized shaft A is heated to a prescribed temp., the shaft is lowered from a vertical direction and is imposed on a work supporting base 31. A movable part 26a of a cylinder 26 is then extended to bring a work hold-down 30 and to press the upper part of the shaft A, thereby supporting the shaft A in the perpendicular posture. A cylinder 22 is pushed in this state to advance a side roller 21 and to grasp the shaft A with a pair of stationary rollers 12 and rollers 21 so that the plural longitudinal positions of the shaft A are freely rotatably restrained and supported. The hold-down 30 and the base 31 are then moved and are detached from both ends of the shaft A. While the shaft A is kept rotated by driving a motor 20 for rotation to rotate a pair of the rollers 12, the cooling fluid is sprayed to from nozzles 24 to the shaft A. Said shaft is thereby cooled and hardened.
