Abstract:
PURPOSE:To suppress the extraction of segments at a part where a contour line has a large curvature and to recognize an object accurately and speedily by setting a proper rectilinear threshold value in case a ridgeline is extracted from the distribution of size the gradient vectors of gradation images and applying polygonal approximation to the extracted ridgeline. CONSTITUTION:A segment tracking means 170 detects a ridgeline picture element string out of ridgeline picture element data stored in a ridgeline picture element memory means 100. A segment length measuring means 140 measures the rectilinear distance between a segment start picture element and a searching picture element. Then a polygonal approximation means 150 compares the value of the varying angle between the rectilinear distance and the gradient vector with a threshold value. When the varying angle exceeds the threshold value, a segment end point picture element is detected and a 1st segment is decided. Hereafter the segments are successively extracted out of the ridgeline picture element string. Then the polygonal approximation is applied to the contour line of an object.
