Filtering processing to enhance paper boundary parts is carried out to an image obtained by scanning a line CCD sensor along the height direction of a sheet mountain, and the contrast data of the boundary parts are added to the boundary directions so that contrast data distribution can be created. A contrast data threshold is calculated with respect to the obtained contrast data distribution, and the brighter areas are extracted as boundaries. Also, the number of the boundary parts lower than the contrast data threshold is compensated by a compensation process to certify the existence of the boundaries. Thus, the number of sheets can be highly precisely realized.
