To determine a water content from an application to drying of a refractory material behind a shell and an attrition state of the refractory material during operation.
In this refractory monitoring method, a portion retaining water condensed during an initial drying by heating inside a shell is monitored from an application to drying of a refractory material, and a substantial attrition portion of the refractory material is monitored during operation after the drying, so that a water content from the application to drying of the refractory material and an attrition state thereof during the operation are determined. This refractory monitoring device 1 comprises a thermal neutron detector 3 arranged on the opposite side to an outside surface of the shell of a block-shaped iron member 2, a pair of graphite rods 4 arranged on both sides of the thermal neutron detector 3, and a fast neutron source 5 arranged apart from the thermal neutron detector 3 and the graphite rods 4.
