To provide a method and a device for energy-saving photooxidative desulfurization for greatly saving electric power energy required for photooxidation while taking advantage of photooxidation using atmospheric oxygen as an oxidizer.
When irradiating a fuel oil with short-wavelength light with wavelength 280 nm in the presence of molecular oxygen, easily reactive sulfur compound reacts with oxygen in a mild reaction condition or in a short reaction time, where among sulfur compounds existing in the fuel oil, most of hardly reactive sulfur compounds such as thiophene, benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene, and their alkylated compounds such as alkyl thiophene, alkyl benzothiophene, alkyl dibenzothiophene hardly react, and then, the reaction product and hardly reactive sulfur compounds are removed from the fuel oil by an adsorbent. In this way, the energy-saving photooxidation desulfurization method and the device for it are provided.
