PURPOSE: To provide an external character processing method and its device capable of preventing the same external character data from being overlappedly stored in a document.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of judging that an external character inputted by a document external character retrieving means 4 does not exist in a document external character storing area (a), a document external character storing means 5 stores external character data consisting of an inputted external character code and an external character image extracted by a system external character extracting means 2 in the area (a). At the time of judging that the external character inputted by the means 4 exists in the area (a), a document external character rewriting means 6 judges whether the external character image stored in the area (a) is equal to the external character image extracted by the means 2 or not, and when both the images are not equal to each other, rewrites the external character image stored in the area (a) to the external character image extracted by the means 2.
