Abstract:
PURPOSE: To drastically enhance the efficiency in removing the nonmetallic inclusions in a molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: A ceramic filter 3 is provided in the passage 1 for molten metal 4, a couple of solid electrodes 5 are dipped on the upstream and downstream sides of the filter 3, and an AC current is applied to efficiently move the nonmetallic inclusions in the molten metal toward the filter by electrophoresis. Consequently, the nonmetallic inclusions of several ten to several hundred microns are removed without significantly increasing the pressure drop of the passage 1.
