PURPOSE: To form uniform and dense structure and to improve strength by moving a middle frequency heating coil fitted onto a metallic mold over the entire length in a vertical direction, and moving a water cooling device from the bottom to top end side of the metallic mold.
CONSTITUTION: A heating and cooling device 2 is once moved back and forth over the entire length in the vertical direction of a metallic mold 7 and is thereby kept preheated while middle frequency current is conducted in a middle frequency heating coil 24 and cooling water is not supplied to a water cooler 25. A molten metal is poured through a pouring pipe 5 into a casting mold body 4 down to the part below the riser part 16 thereof to cast a roll 9 and to pour a riser 19 in a riser part 16. When slag floats and the surface layer of a cylindrical part 13 of the roll is made into a semi-molten state upon lapse of a specified time, electricity is conducted again to the coil 24 and the cooling water is supplied to the warer cooler 25 to spray the cooling water from a nozzle 30 into the mold 7. The device 2 is moved in this state from the bottom to top end side of the mold 7.
